FAQ / Garden sheds

Tool sheds and garden storage

Bicycles, mowers, shelves and small jobs place different demands on a shed. Read about size, entrances and interior layout, plus matching the facade, managing moisture, foundations and costs.

01Dimensions and storage

What types of garden storage building does Pinegard make?

Lockable stores for tools, bicycles and garden equipment, log stores and larger utility buildings. We adapt dimensions, doors, windows and finishes to the site. Options range from narrow storage beside a house to a larger shed accommodating a ride-on mower.

How should I size a shed for bicycles and a mower?

Allow for the route out as well as the equipment footprint. A bicycle in front of a mower will obstruct access even if both fit inside.

Arrange items so that others do not have to be carried outside first. Hand tools can go on walls and shallow shelves; frequently used items should be easy to reach.

When are double doors useful?

For a wide mower, ride-on mower, wheelbarrow or large seasonal furniture. The clear width with the doors fully open matters more than the leaf dimensions alone. You also need manoeuvring space outside and a threshold that equipment can cross.

Can a garden shed be used as a workshop?

It can accommodate a workbench, shelving, lighting and sockets for small jobs. The bench needs light and equipment needs working space beyond its own footprint. An unheated store without ventilation does not automatically provide suitable conditions for regular year-round work.

How should shelves and tools be arranged inside the shed?

Long tools can hang vertically, small accessories fit in shallow containers, and heavy items should be stored low down. Bicycles and mowers mainly need a clear route to the doors.

Deep shelves on both walls quickly narrow the aisle. Plan them with the equipment rather than filling the entire empty interior with shelving.

02Facade and enclosure

Can the shed exterior match the house facade?

Yes. For Pinegard garden sheds, we select the colour, board layout, windows, doors and roofing to suit the surroundings. The building can repeat a terrace detail or provide a quiet backdrop to the garden. We also design narrow storage between the house and fence.

Can the doors be concealed in the timber facade?

Yes. Continuing the board pattern across the door leaf helps blend the entrance into the wall. Working clearances, a handle and access to hinges are still required. This detail creates a consistent appearance but does not itself provide a burglary-resistance rating.

Should a tool shed have a window?

A window is useful by a workbench and for finding items without switching on the light. A solid wall provides more space for shelving and hooks. A high or narrow window can bring daylight in while leaving room for fittings below.

Can storage be combined with a carport?

Yes; see our carport with a utility room. A shared roof brings both functions together, but storage access must remain clear with a car parked. The storage door should not obstruct manoeuvring or conflict with opening car doors.

How can storage be separated from the seating terrace?

With a solid wall and a separate entrance from a path or driveway. Bicycles and the mower can then be taken out without crossing the dining area. Matching timber and colour can visually connect the two areas despite their different uses.

03Foundations and services

What can a garden shed stand on?

Depending on its structure, it may stand on concrete footings, blocks or a suitably prepared slab. Existing paving needs checks for load-bearing capacity and level. Support positions must match the building layout, and timber should not remain in permanent contact with damp ground.

Can the shed be placed directly on grass?

Grass and soft soil do not provide stable, dry support. Settlement can distort the building and make doors difficult to close. The shed needs foundations that carry its weight and separate the timber components from water at ground level.

What protects stored items from damp?

A watertight roof, effective drainage, a dry floor and air exchange. A wet mower or furniture brings moisture inside, so closing the doors is not enough. Electronics, batteries and chemicals also have their own storage requirements.

Can the shed have lighting and power sockets?

Yes, electrical services can be included in the design. A light above the entrance helps after dark, while sockets by a bench or shelf supply equipment. The connection and fittings must suit the building conditions; chargers should not sit on a damp floor.

How is water drained from the shed roof?

Through the roof slope, gutters and outlets to the planned rainwater drainage point. Water should not flow across the doorway, against an adjacent wall or beneath the floor. Gutters can be matched to the facade and their route planned before paths and planting are completed.

04Materials, price and maintenance

What affects the price of a Pinegard garden shed?

Its size, structural and facade materials, roof covering, number of doors and windows, and equipment. Flooring, services, shelving or a connection to a carport changes the scope. Access for delivering and assembling components in the chosen garden location also matters.

Can the shed be the same colour as the pergola?

Yes, both can be designed with coordinated finishes. An existing pergola may have changed shade as the timber and coating weathered. It is best to compare a sample of the new finish directly with the older structure.

How should tool shed doors be secured?

The locking system must work with the door leaf, frame and hinges. A lock alone does not strengthen a weak door, and a concealed entrance is not a substitute for security. For valuable equipment, visibility from the house and additional property protection also matter.

How should a shed close to a fence be maintained?

Access is needed to the wall, gutters and components that require adjustment. Leaves and plants should not trap moisture against the timber or block drainage. Renew the exterior coating according to its condition, especially on sides exposed to sun and rain.

What material is a Pinegard shed made from?

We use glued laminated timber for garden shed structures. A separately selected facade determines its appearance: board arrangement, colour and the layout of windows and doors. Cladding and roofing can be matched to other structures in the garden.

Dimensions and layout

Equipment, doors and access

Stored items occupy only part of the interior. A mower needs a route out, a bicycle room to turn and shelves access without moving everything else.

  1. Width: the largest equipment and wall shelving
  2. Depth: stored item length and a route to the exit
  3. Height: equipment, holders and clear doorway height
