FAQ / Timber pergolas
Modern timber pergolas
Shade, privacy or rain protection? Learn the roles of the structure, roof and pergola sides. We also explain timber, foundations, controls, pricing and the implications of extending later.

We could not find that question. Try another term or talk to Pinegard.
01Structure and location
Does Pinegard make pergolas to measure?
Yes. We adapt width, depth, height, support positions and screens to a terrace or separate garden location. A pergola can create a dining area, seating space or sheltered route. Its layout takes furniture and movement between the house and garden into account.
How does an open-slatted pergola differ from a terrace roof?
An open-slatted pergola lets light and air through the gaps between its elements. A terrace roof has a covering that shelters the space below. Rain protection requires suitable roofing, pitch and drainage, rather than the beam structure alone.
Can a pergola stand independently of the house?
Yes. A freestanding structure creates a separate area in the garden, beside a pool or on a terrace. Every support needs its own foundation. Lighting and motorised screens need power brought to the pergola location.
What timber is used for Pinegard pergolas?
We use glued laminated timber for the structure and protect exterior surfaces with OSMO coatings. Load-bearing beams and timber screens have different functions and sections. Colour and layout can be matched to the house facade and terrace surface.
Can a pergola cover a corner terrace?
Yes; see our corner pergola on a concrete slab terrace. The corner affects beam joints, support spacing and drainage. With doors on two sides of the building, both access routes and space around furniture must be preserved.
02Roofing and screens
Does an open-slatted pergola protect against rain?
It does not provide a watertight cover: water passes through the gaps. Protecting furniture and the dining area requires a suitable covering. Pinegard offers options including glass, blinds and solid roofs; protection depends on the selected system.
Which provides more shade: a roof or a side screen?
A roof limits overhead sunlight, while a side screen helps with low morning or evening rays. Closer-spaced slats give more shade but also reduce views and airflow. Screen positions should suit the orientation rather than the building's symmetry alone.
Can a pergola have motorised blinds?
Yes, Pinegard offers motorised or manually operated screens. Tracks, fixings and motors need space in the structure, and motorisation requires power. The manufacturer of the specific system defines permitted operation in wind and rain.
How can a pergola be screened from the street or neighbouring property?
With timber slats, a solid wall or a side blind. Slats partly screen views, a solid wall gives permanent protection, and a raised blind opens the side. Screening one direction lets the remaining sides stay open to the garden.
Can climbing plants grow over a pergola?
Plants need supports suited to their mature weight, including when wet. Dense growth makes timber harder to dry and its coating harder to reach. A separate plant support makes maintenance easier, while gutters, tracks and moving components should remain free of plants.
03Materials and foundations
How does a timber pergola differ from an aluminium pergola?
Timber has visible grain and its coating needs checking and renewal where worn. When comparing it with aluminium, look at finishes, joints, roofing and screens on both structures.
The fairest comparison is between similarly equipped options. The post material alone does not determine the comfort of the whole pergola.
Do beams and slats have the same function?
Posts and beams carry structural and roof loads. Slats mainly provide screening and shape the appearance. We therefore consider support positions and screen patterns separately during design.
How should I choose a pergola colour?
Use timber samples beside the facade, window frames and terrace. Pinegard sends them by courier after the order is placed. The same shade looks different in sun and shadow, while grain and coating type also affect the result.
What foundations are needed beneath pergola posts?
Supports must transfer loads to the ground through designed foundations, such as concrete footings. Their size and anchors depend on the structure and site conditions. Paving or decking can conceal a foundation, but cannot replace it.
Can a pergola be installed on an upper-floor terrace?
Our portfolio includes such projects, including this fifth-floor terrace with a pergola. The slab, fixings, wind loads, waterproofing and method of lifting components all need assessment. Each building must be checked individually.
04Equipment, price and maintenance
Can a pergola have LED lighting and radiant heaters?
Yes. Pinegard offers both. Lighting can define dining areas and access routes, while radiant heaters warm the seating zone. Cables, mounting points and power-supply access are prepared along with the structure.
What affects the price of a Pinegard pergola?
Size, shape, timber quantity, roof and the extent of side enclosures. Motorised blinds, glazing, lighting and heaters each contribute to the price. Foundations and installation access also affect project cost.
Does Pinegard design and install the pergola?
Yes. We prepare a concept and quotation, followed by a detailed order and working drawing. We manufacture the components, deliver them and install them on the property. Customers receive material samples before their final finish choice.
How often should pergola timber be refinished?
According to coating condition and exposure, rather than one fixed interval for the entire structure. Exposed posts and screens weather differently from sheltered components. Before renewal, prepare the surface according to the chosen finish manufacturer's instructions.
Can a roof or glazing be added to an existing pergola?
Adding roofing or glazing requires an assessment of the existing structure. New elements change loads, fixings and drainage. If you plan such an extension, it is worth allowing for it when ordering the pergola.
Dimensions and layout
Pergola footprint and supports
Posts define the form and routes around furniture. Roofing, glazing and screens increase loads, so their scope affects structural layout.
- Width: table or seating plus access routes
- Depth: the covered part of the terrace or garden
- Height: space under beams and planned screens
