Timber terrace roofs

Glass, blinds or a solid roof? Learn how the choice affects shelter and daylight inside the house. We also answer questions about measurements, post positions, roof pricing and site preparation.

01Structure and fitting to the house

Does Pinegard build made-to-measure terrace roofs?

Yes. We design, manufacture and install made-to-measure terrace roofs. When fitting one to an existing house, the windows, doors and eaves height matter as much as the terrace width. You can start with your own idea or a Pinegard project you like.

What can be customised in a Firkant terrace roof?

You can adapt the dimensions, timber colour, roof and side enclosures. Options include glazing, slatted walls, blinds, LED lighting and radiant heaters, also shown in our terrace roof range. Post spacing is determined by the structural design.

How should I measure my terrace for an initial quotation?

For an initial quotation, we need:

  • the width along the house wall;
  • the depth from the house to the terrace edge;
  • the height by the doors and eaves.

Include a photograph of the whole wall showing windows, doors, gutters and lights. Pinegard takes measurements for more complex building shapes.

Where should posts stand in relation to the table and house entrance?

A post should not stand in line with a doorway, behind a chair that needs to pull out, or in the route to the garden. The layout must allow for the table, chairs and space to move them. Moving a support changes the beam span, so its position forms part of the structural design.

Can a terrace roof fit beneath an existing balcony?

We build this type of roof; see our project beneath an existing balcony. The roof, gutter and wall flashing must fit without obstructing the doors. If the design attaches to the balcony, its structure must carry the additional loads; render or insulation alone is not a structural fixing surface.

02Roofing, daylight and screens

Which roof coverings does Pinegard offer?

Options include glass, manual or motorised blinds, and solid coverings such as metal sheeting and PVC membrane. Glass lets light through, a solid covering limits overhead light, and a blind lets you adjust the shade. Rain protection depends on the particular system, roof pitch and drainage.

Will a glass roof make the living room darker?

It lets more light through than an opaque covering, although the beams and glass still reduce the amount. The deeper the roof in front of a window, the greater its effect on indoor daylight. A glass roof over a sunny terrace can be combined with sun shading.

How can heat build-up beneath the roof be reduced?

Overhead shading blocks some sunlight from above, while side blinds help with low morning and evening sun. Open sides allow air to circulate. Pinegard offers blinds and slatted timber walls, positioned to suit the orientation and the house windows.

Can the terrace roof have glazed sides?

Yes. Glazing shelters the terrace from wind and driving rain while retaining the garden view. Tracks need space at floor level and beneath the upper beam, and opening panels need room to slide aside. Glazed sides can be combined with solid or slatted walls.

How can I screen the terrace from neighbours?

With timber slats, a solid wall section or a side blind. Slats let some light and air through, a solid wall provides a permanent screen, and a blind can be raised. Screening is usually most useful facing neighbouring windows or the street, rather than necessarily around the entire terrace.

03Ground preparation and services

Are paving blocks or tiles enough to anchor the posts?

Not as a finishing layer on their own. Posts need load-bearing support and anchoring; concrete footings are among the solutions we use. They can be concealed beneath the terrace surface. Their positions and dimensions depend on structural loads and ground conditions.

Which should be built first: the terrace or its roof?

For a new terrace, the post foundations, electrical routes and finished surface level are planned first. The finishing surface follows and can conceal the footings. A roof can also be installed over an existing terrace, although reaching the foundations may require local removal of the surface.

Where does water from the roof go?

Water flows from the roof into the gutter or outlet specified in the design. Its onward route across the plot must also be agreed so that it does not flood the entrance, foundations or access paths.

Can LED lighting be integrated into the terrace roof?

Yes, Pinegard offers LED lighting in terrace structures. Spotlights or light strips can be positioned above the table, seating and entrance. Concealing cables requires preparation before installation; power supplies and controls must remain accessible for maintenance.

Can radiant heaters be installed beneath the roof?

Yes, they are one of Pinegard's available equipment options. A radiant heater warms people and surfaces within its range, so its position should suit the furniture layout. Fixings, electrical supply and clearances from timber and fabrics depend on the appliance model.

04Price, installation and timber

What affects the price of a Pinegard terrace roof?

The price comprises the structure, roof, side screens and equipment. When comparing options, check whether the quotation includes:

  • glazing and motorised blinds;
  • lighting and radiant heaters;
  • transport and installation;
  • foundation preparation and any work on an existing terrace.

Prices are comparable only when the scope is the same.

Does Pinegard send colour samples?

Yes. After an order is placed, we send material and finish samples by courier. You can hold them against the house facade, window frames and paving instead of comparing colours only on a screen. The samples remain with you.

Does the order include delivery and installation?

Pinegard designs the structure, prepares its components, delivers them to the property and installs them. Before the team arrives, a working drawing sets out dimensions and details. Responsibility for foundations, paving and utility connections must be specified in the order scope.

When should the timber coating be renewed?

When the coating loses continuity or areas show clear wear from sunlight and water. We protect outdoor Pinegard structures with OSMO coatings. A wall exposed to rain weathers differently from a sheltered beam, so renewal intervals depend on exposure and the specific coating.

What timber is used for the terrace roof structure?

We use glued laminated timber for load-bearing terrace roof components. It is made from bonded timber layers, helping produce stable beams in the required sections. Timber remains a natural material: lamination does not eliminate all dimensional movement or small cracks.

Dimensions and layout

Three dimensions for your terrace roof

Width and depth determine the sheltered area. Height beside the house sets the space for beams, covering and roof pitch.

  1. Width along the facade, including window and door positions
  2. Depth from the house wall to the outside terrace edge
  3. Height beside the doors and eaves — the lowest available point
